Cotsirilos, Fuller Lead Cal Poly at Fresno Cross Country Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. — Peter Cotsirilos won the men's 4-mile event, and Bryanna Fuller took fourth place in the women's 5k at the Fresno Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning, as both Mustangs led their squads at Woodward Park.
 
Beginning with the women's competition, the Mustangs and San Jose State tied for the top score of 39 points, with the Spartans narrowly earning a tiebreaker on total time, 1:31:31 to 1:32:06.
 
Meet co-hosts Fresno State (80 points) and Fresno Pacific (104) followed in third and fourth, ahead of CSU Bakersfield (108) and Notre Dame de Namur (161).
 
Fuller completed the 3.1-mile course in 18:13.5. The redshirt sophomore averaged a mile pace of 5:52.8.
 
SJSU's Jenny Sandoval won in 17:50.4.
 
Also scoring for Cal Poly were true freshmen Angela DiPentino (fifth in 18:15.3) & Abbey Fisk (eighth, 18:21.6), redshirt freshman Melodie Leroudier (10th, 18:35.5) and first-year Brigette Takeuchi (12th, 18:40.9).
 
Redshirt freshman Ashley Heys (13th, 18:41.0) and sophomore Delaney Fitzsimmons (14th, 18:44.1) also placed in the top 15; redshirt freshman Rachel Bordes added an 18th-place time of 19:36.0; and sophomore Michaela Barros took 33rd in 20:44.3.

Cal Poly then dominated the men's field with a near-perfect score of 16 points. (Bulldog senior Joel Gonzalez broke up a would-be clean sweep, notching fifth place.)
 
The Spartans came in second with 65 points, followed by Fresno Pacific at 70 and Fresno State at 73.
 
Cotsirilos edged fellow junior Sean McDermott for the top spot, 20:38.5 to 20:40.8.
 
Junior Mikey Giguere was close on their heels at 20:44.2, while sophomore Alex Merder came in fourth at 20:51.1, and redshirt freshman Robert Franklin rounded out the scoring at 20:56.2.
 
Cal Poly senior Zachary Wims also finished in the top 10 with an eighth-place 21:04.9.
 
The Mustangs, defending Big West Conference champions on both sides, now have a recovery and training period while school starts on Sept. 14, returning to competition on Sept. 29 at Oregon's Bill Dellinger Invitational (held at Springfield Country Club in Eugene).
