Volleyball Falls to UC Davis in Five Set Thriller
Keddy's kills came on 59 swings (.356) while Pon's kills came on 45 swings with just two hitting errors (.400). Kristina Graven was the third Mustang in double figures with 12 kills.
Devon Damelio had 21 kills to lead UC Davis while Betsy Dedlak had 19 kills. Allison Whitson and Valerie Brain recorded 17 and 14 kills respectively.
UC Davis was led by Caroline Mercado with 23 digs with Jenny Woolway and Whtson each adding 19.
Each team hit .276 in the match with UCD accounting for 80 kills compared to Cal Poly's 74.
Cal Poly had five team blocks compared to UCD's two with the Aggies holding a 4-1 advantage in aces.
In the first set with Cal Poly holding a 10-9 advantage the Mustangs went on an 8-2 run capped by an ace by Garrett. The Mustangs continued to build on the lead, 19-11, when Kristina Graven and Megan McConnell were credited with an assisted block forcing a UCD timeout.
The Mustangs expanded their lead to 21-13 on a kill by Keddy when UCD scored the next four straight points to cut the lead to 21-17 on a kill by Sedlak.
UCD continued to gain on the Mustangs, closing the gap to three (22-19) on an attack error by Graven.
The Mustangs came back to score the next three points to put away the set, 25-19, on a kill by Pon along with an assisted block by Garrett and Keddy and a kill by Keddy.
In the second set UC Davis jumped to an 8-4 lead on a kill by Valerie Brain forcing a Cal Poly timeout.
The Mustangs closed to one (10-9) on a kill by McConnell, but UCD responded and held a 15-12 lead.
Cal Poly rallied on a kill by Keddy to cut the lead to one, 16-15, forcing a UCD timeout. The Aggies responded and held a 22-19 lead when the Mustangs called a timeout.
Cal Poly closed the score (22-21) on a pair of attack errors by the Aggies and tied the set at 23-23 when Brain missed on an attack.
After a UCD timeout, the Mustang fought off one set point on a kill by Smith and a second by Pon.
UCD held off set point twice on a pair of kills by Allison Whitson tying the set at 28-28.
The Aggies won the set 30-28 on kills by Woolway and Damelio.
In the third set after UCD led 13-5, the Mustangs rallied to cut the lead 13-9 forcing a Aggie timeout.
UC Davis rallied out of the timeout to take a 19-13 lead on a kill by Brain.
Late in the set, Pon had back to back kills, cutting the lead to six at 23-18, but the Aggies won two successive points to win the third set 25-18.
In the fourth set the Mustangs came out strong holding a 9-5 lead on a kill by McConnell and expanded their lead to 11-5 after a pair of errors by UCD. Cal Poly maintained its lead on kills by Pon and Keddy giving the Mustangs a 14-8 advantage.
Successive kills by Keddy gave the Mustangs a 17-8 lead when UCD scored the next three points cutting the lead to 17-11.
Cal Poly held a five point advantage (20-15) on a kill by Pon as the teams continued to exchange points. UCD broke the string and scored three straight points, cutting the lead to 21-19 on an error by Smith.
UCD continued the charge cutting the lead to one (21-20) when kills by Graven and Keddy gave the Mustangs a three point lead. Back to back kills by UCD cut the Mustang lead to one when McConnell and Pon came up big with a block giving the Mustangs set point.
One point later, Keddy put away the set on kill off an assist by Garrett tying the match at two sets each.
In the fifth and deciding set, UCD moved out to a 3-0 lead before the Mustangs got on the board on a kill by Pon.
UCD kept the pressure on and held a 4-1 lead on a kill by Sedlak and expanded its lead to 5-2 on a kill by Damelio.
The Mustangs came back on kills by Garrett and Graven, cutting the lead to one. UCD responded with three straight points and a four point lead (8-4).
UC Davis expanded its lead to 13-7 on a block by Whitson and Sedlak and with a kill by Damelio moved to match point.
Sedlak won the match with a kill off an assist from Jenny Woolway.
