FRESNO, Calif. – Kathryn Webb highlighted the Cal Poly women's tennis team's Saturday at the Fresno State-hosted Bulldog Classic as the sophomore advanced to the semifinals of the A Flight singles bracket.
Webb (above) dispatched of Portland's Megan Govi, 6-1, 6-1, during her round of 16 match at the Spalding G Wathen Tennis Center before reaching the semifinals after Washington's Samantha Smith withdrew due to illness. Webb will face Fresno State's Olga Kirpicheva on Sunday at 10 a.m.
In other singles matches and also in the A Flight, Mustang junior and top-seeded Alexa Lee suffered a 6-3, 6-3 round of 16 defeat against San Jose State's Chau Troung.
In the B Flight, senior Jocelyn Davis fought Washington's Adrijan Pavlovic in a four-hour match before succumbing, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Ane McPike battled Nevada's Juliette Legendre before dropping a tight 7-5, 7-6 decision in the round of 16. In a third round of 16 matchup, freshman Ireen Kuipers was forced to withdraw due to injury during the first set of her encounter against San Jose State's Isadora Busch.
"We had a hard-fought day," first-year head coach Damon Coupe said. "Kathryn reaching the semifinals in the top flight is a huge testimony to her commitment to get better each day. Ane had a tough match against a top-three player from Nevada and played great."
With the tournament schedule pushed back due to Friday's inclement weather in the central valley, all of Cal Poly's doubles matches were suspended on Saturday.
