UC Riverside Women's Soccer Defeats Cal Poly in Overtime, 2-1
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Andrea Morales scored her fourth goal of the season, a three-yard shot from the right side of the box, barely four minutes into the first overtime period, lifting UC Riverside to a 2-1 victory over Cal Poly in a Big West Conference women's soccer match Thursday night inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
A cross from Deborah Musa found Morales wide open on the right side and she booted the ball past Mustang goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin for the winning goal.
The loss dropped Cal Poly to 2-3 in Big West games and 8-7-1 for the season. UC Riverside improved to 2-1 and 7-6-1.
The two teams traded goals in the first half -- UC Riverside scoring early and Cal Poly answering late.
Celina Valencia took a cross from Alexandra Quincey and connected on a nine-yard shot from the right side of the box less than four minutes into the match. It was Valencia's second goal of the year.
Cal Poly tied the match at 1-1 with two minutes remaining in the opening period. Cristina Farrington punched in a short shot off a cross from McKenzie Orand for her fourth goal of the season.
Neither team scored in the second half. Cal Poly came close to breaking the deadlock when Sara Lancaster's rebound to Kacey Held found the back of the net in the 49th minute, but the Mustangs were offsides on the play.
Cal Poly had eight corner kicks to two for the visiting Highlanders. The Mustangs also attempted more shots, 18-11, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
UC Riverside goalkeeper Sara Slaughter made six saves while Gauvin was credited with three saves.
Cal Poly hosts UC Davis on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Alex G. Spanos Stadium for another Big West Conference match. Six Mustang seniors will be honored on Senior Day in a pregame ceremony.
