Novachkov, DesRoches Earn All-American Status at NCAA Finals

ST. LOUIS, Missouri -- Cal Poly's pair of quarterfinalists in the 2012 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships both suffered setbacks Friday morning at the Scottrade Center.

Boris Novachkov and Ryan DesRoches, however, clinched All-American status with victories in the wrestlebacks Friday night.

Novachkov was edged on riding time by Montell Marion of Iowa 7-6 at 141 pounds while DesRoches dropped a 6-1 decision to Nick Amuchastegui of Stanford at 174 pounds. Both Mustang wrestlers are seniors and seeded sixth, facing opponents who were seeded third.

Novachkov (pictured at right) led 5-3 following a reversal with one second left in the second period, but surrendered an escape, takedown and riding time advantage of 1 minute, 25 seconds to Marion. Novachkov escaped with 11 seconds remaining to tie the match at 6-6 but couldn't secure a last-second takedown.

In the wrestllebacks, Novachkov decisioned unseeded William Ashnault of Rutgers 6-3, followed by a 2-0 victory over eighth-seeded Darius Little of North Carolina State.

Novachkov can place from third to sixth place. With his wins in the wrestlebacks Friday, he has become the first Mustang to claim three Division I All-America honors. He was second at 141 pounds a year ago and seventh at 133 pounds in 2010.

On Saturday, Novachkov (32-4) faces fifth-seeded Hunter Stieber (28-5) of Ohio State in the wrestleback semifinals, followed by the wrestleback finals. Novachkov has not faced Stieber before.

DesRoches lost for the third time this season to Amuchastegui, giving up a takedown in the first and second periods, an escape in the second period and 2:42 in riding time. Only point for DesRoches was a first-period escape.

Amuchastegui beat DesRoches 8-0 in a January dual meet and 5-4 in the Pac-12 finals.

In the wrestlebacks, DesRoches decisioned No. 12 Jimmy Sheptock of Maryland 5-1, then dropped an 11-2 major decision to seventh-seeded Jordan Blanton of Illinois.

DesRoches (27-5) will take on fifth-seeded Ethan Lofthouse (27-9) of Iowa for seventh and eighth place Saturday morning. The pair have never met.

Redshirt freshman Dominic Kastl advanced to the fourth round of wrestlebacks with a 6-3 decision against Gabriel Burak of Northern Colorado, but fell later in the day to unseeded Kyle Blevins of Appalachian State 6-2 and was eliminated.

Kastl finished 2-2 in the tournament and 14-5 on the year.

Mustang 197-pounder Ryan Smith lost two matches Thursday and was eliminated from the three-day tournament.

Cal Poly is in 27th place with 19 points entering the final day of competition Saturday. Penn State leads with 124 points, followed by Minnesota (101.5), Iowa (93), Cornell (86) and Ohio State (60).

Matches to determine third through eighth places are scheduled for Saturday at 8 a.m., with the championship finals slated for 4:30 p.m. PDT on ESPN. The medal-round matches will air on ESPNU as well as ESPN3.com.
