Cal Poly Wrestling Splits Pair of Matches in NWCA National Duals

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Following a 34-6 loss to No. 10 Missouri in the opening round of the NWCA National Duals on Saturday afternoon, the Cal Poly wrestling team defeated host Rutgers 24-22 in the match that determined fifth and sixth place.

Against Missouri, Cal Poly's only winners were Boris Novachkov (pictured at right) with a 6-4 decision over Nicholas Hucke at 141 pounds and Dominic Kastl with a 3-1 overtime decision over Zach Toal at 165 pounds.

Mustang 174-pounder Ryan DesRoches lost a tight 3-2 decision to Dorian Henderson while Ryan Smith fell 6-1 to Brent Haynes at 197.

In the Rutgers match, Cal Poly won the opening three bouts for a 12-0 lead and opened up a 21-4 advantage after six matches, then held on for the victory.

Britain Longmire won by forfeit at 125, Jake Tanenbaum was an 8-4 winner at 133 and Novachkov edged William Ashnault 1-0 in overtime to give the Mustangs their 12-0 lead.

After Rutgers earned a major decision at 149, Gianpier Yanez and Dominic Kastl earned victories for a 21-4 Cal Poly lead. Yanez was a 6-5 winner at 157 pounds while Kastl pinned Doug Harmann of Rutgers in 3 minutes, 28 seconds.

Rutgers won the next three bouts to take a 22-21 lead, but Cal Poly clinched the match with a 3-2 decision by Kelan Bragg at 285.

Cal Poly, 6-7 in dual meets, will spend the next two weeks preparing for the Pac-12 finals Feb. 26 at Boise State.
