VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Garrett Schaner's major decision in the final bout secured No. 22 Stanford's 23-17 victory over No. 18 Cal Poly in a Pac-12 dual wrestling meet Sunday afternoon inside Mott Gym.

Schaner earned a 10-1 decision over Cal Poly 157-pounder Gianpier Yanez to clinch the dual meet for the Cardinal (6-5, 3-0 Pac-12).

Cal Poly (4-3, 2-2 Pac-12) rallied from 10-0 and 19-10 deficits, closing the gap to 19-17 with a 10-1 major decision by 141-pounder Boris Novachkov and a 3-1 decision by Kyle Chene at 149, before Schaner sealed the verdict for Stanford.

Trailing 10-0, Cal Poly finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth bout as senior Ryan Smith (pictured at right) scored six takedowns, an escape, three penalty points and riding time en route to a 17-5 major decision over Alan Yen, improving to 16-8 on the year.

After Stanford heavyweight Dan Scherer edged Cal Poly's Atticus Disney 3-1 in overtime, the Cardinal forfeited the 125-pound bout as Cal Poly closed to within 13-10.

Stanford answered with a first-period fall by No. 9 Ryan Mango at 133 pounds as he pinned Jake Tanenbaum in 1 minute, 37 seconds, restoring Stanford's nine-point lead at 19-10.

Novachkov, ranked No. 4, improved his record to 21-2 by jumping to an 8-1 lead in the first period, scoring a takedown and a pair of three-point near-falls. He finished with an escape in the second round and riding time for the 10-1 major decision.

Chene, who has been with the team for two weeks since transferring from Santa Ana College, earned a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Timmy Boone at 149. Both wrestlers earned escapes but Chene won the match with a 1:16 advantage in riding time.

Feature match of the dual was at 174 pounds pitting No. 4 Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly against top-ranked Nick Amuchastegui.

But Amuchastegui, in his first-ever meeting with DesRoches, stole the spotlight with an 8-0 major decision, scoring a takedown in the first period, an escape and takedown in the second round and a takedown and riding time in the final act.

Amuchastegui is now 14-0 on the year while DesRoches fell to 19-1. Both are seniors.

At 285, Disney and Scherer traded escapes in the second and third periods, forcing overtime. Scherer notched a takedown at the edge of the mat in the final second of the one-minute sudden victory period for the win.

The 184-pound bout also went into overtime. Cal Poly's Sean Dougherty scored a reversal in the second period and an escape in the third round while Stanford's Spence Patrick tallied a reversal in the second period and riding time to knot the match at 3-3.

After a scoreless sudden victory period, Patrick earned a reversal in the first overtime and Dougherty could only manage an escape in the second overtime of the 5-4 decision.
