Cal Poly Wrestling Rallies to Defeat Boise State, 22-20

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Decisions by Ryan DesRoches, Sean Dougherty and Ryan Smith erased a 16-13 Boise State lead as Cal Poly rallied to defeat the Broncos 22-20 in a Pac-12 dual wrestling meet Sunday afternoon inside Mott Gym.

Boise State (1-6, 1-4 Pac-12), the defending Pac-12 tournament champion, used back-to-back falls by Georgi Ivanov at 157 pounds and Michael Cuthbertson at 165 pounds to turn a 13-4 deficit into a 16-13 advantage with four bouts remaining.

Cal Poly (3-2, 2-1 Pac-12), however, used the three straight decisions at 174, 184 and 197 for a 22-16 lead and Boise State 285-pounder J.T. Felix could only muster a major decision in the final bout.

DesRoches, now 19-0 on the year and ranked No. 4 by InterMat, led 4-2 after two periods before scoring a pair of takedowns and riding time in the final round for a 9-3 decision over Scotty Bacon.

Dougherty (pictured at right) overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a reversal and three-point near fall in the first period and extended his lead to 7-2 with another reversal in the second round. Cody Dixon managed three takedowns in the final act, but they were not enough in a 13-8 decision for Dougherty.

At 197, Smith improved to 14-8 with a 10-6 decision over Brent Chriswell, scoring a takedown and three-point near fall in the first period, an escape in the second period and an escape and takedown in the final round.

Other Mustang winners were Boris Novachkov with a 13-2 major decision, Kyle Chene with a 4-3 decision and Britain Longmire by forfeit.

Novachkov improved to 19-2 on the season by jumping to an 8-0 first-period lead thanks to a takedown and a pair of three-point near falls. The nation's fourth-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds also recorded takedowns in each of the final two rounds and compiled 3:02 in riding time for his major decision over Ben Demeulle.

Chene, who transferred to Cal Poly from Santa Ana College last week, picked up his first win as a Mustang, scoring an escape with two seconds left to snap a 3-3 deadlock against Steven Hernandez at 149 pounds.

Cal Poly wrestling, presented by Meathead Movers, wrestles at San Francisco State on Friday night at 7 and returns home Sunday to host Stanford for a 1 p.m. Pac-12 dual meet inside Mott Gym.
