SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly is among at least 28 teams, including eight in the top 25, who will compete in the two-day Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational this weekend at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
First round Friday is scheduled for 9 a.m., with the quarterfinals slated for 7 p.m. Competition resumes Saturday at 9 a.m., with the championship finals set to start at 3 p.m.
Coach Brendan Buckley's Mustangs are ranked as high as No. 19 this week and will face such wrestling powers as No. 5 Cornell, No. 8 Michigan, No. 10 Ohio State, co-No. 14s Oregon State and Pittsburgh, No. 22 Kent State and No. 24 Edinboro. Defending Pacific-12 Conference champion Boise State also is entered.
Cal Poly's lineup will include two placewinners from the 2010 Las Vegas Invitational. Boris Novachkov (pictured at right) placed second at 141 pounds while Ryan DesRoches claimed third place at 165 pounds.
Novachkov currently is ranked No. 2 at 141 by all major Division I wrestling polls. The two-time NCAA All-American (second in 2011, seventh in 2010) and two-time Pac-12 champion won his match at the NWCA All-Star Classic last week and sports a 7-0 record this season.
DesRoches is a two-time NCAA qualifier who is 6-0 on the year and has 37 career falls. He currently is ranked as high as No. 7 by InterMat.
Ryan Smith, 4-1 this season, is ranked as high as No. 15 at 197 pounds by WrestlingReport.com. He finished second at 197 in the Pac-12 finals two years ago and did not qualify for the NCAA Championships, but placed fifth at the Pac-12 finals last season and qualified for the nationals.
The rest of Cal Poly's lineup for the Las Vegas Invitational includes Britain Longmire (4-3) at 125 pounds, Brandan Rocha (1-1) at 133, Adam Aslam (1-3) at 149, Elijah Jackson (1-0) at 157, Dominic Kastl (4-1) at 165, Sean Dougherty (4-2) at 184 and Atticus Disney (1-0) at 285.
