  • Novachkov, DesRoches Share Cal Poly's Most Outstanding Wrestler Award

    Cal Poly 141-pounder Boris Novachkov and 174-pounder Ryan DesRoches, both seniors who earned NCAA All-America honors in March, were named co-Most Outstanding Wrestlers for the 2011-12 season. The awards were presented Saturday night at the team’s awards banquet held at the Avila Beach Golf Resort.

    Cal Poly won three of the final four bouts, but couldn’t overcome a 16-7 deficit and fell 19-17 to Utah Valley in a non-conference dual wrestling meet Friday night at Stanford. Ryan DesRoches and Atticus Disney won by decision while Ryan Smith earned a major decision for the Mustangs, who fell to 5-6 on the year. Utah Valley improved to 4-7.

Ryan DesRoches, Ryan Smith, Kelan Bragg and Boris Novachkov all earned victories to lead Cal Poly to a 26-11 victory over Arizona State in a Pac-12 dual meet Friday night before 1,017 inside Mott Gym.

    Cal Poly will honor its four seniors prior to Friday night’s final home dual meet of the 2011-12 wrestling season against Arizona State inside Mott Gym. The quartet of seniors -- 141-pounder Boris Novachkov, 174-pounder Ryan DesRoches, 197-pounder Ryan Smith and 285-pounder Kelan Bragg -- will be honored at 6:50 p.m., 10 minutes prior to the start of the Pac-12 dual meet. The foursome has combined for 311 victories in their four-year Mustang careers.
