Cal Poly Finishes First in PLNU Super San Diego Women's Golf Championship

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Laura Howard beat Asia Adell in a two-hole playoff and Cal Poly captured the inaugural PLNU Super San Diego Championship women's golf tournament hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University on Tuesday at the Riverwalk Golf Course.

Howard carded a final-round 75, one shy of her career best, and Adell posted a 77 as both finished with 12-over-par 156 totals on the 6,000-yard, par-72 course.

Howard made a 16-foot putt on the first playoff hole, forcing Adell to sink her five-footer and move on to the second hole, where Howard clinched the individual title.

Spencer Heller of Sonoma State finished one stroke out of the playoff and Mercedes Rios of Dallas Baptist was fourth at 158. There were 105 players from 22 institutions – 19 squads counted in the team scoring – in the two-day event.

Cal Poly claimed the team championship with a four-person 313 total Tuesday and a 36-hole 634 total, beating Grand Canyon by 24 strokes. Chico State was another four strokes back for third place.

Morgan Thomas of Cal Poly scored the tournament's first-ever hole-in-one on the 16th hole, a 147-yard par three. She was the first-round leader with a 76 and carded an 85 Tuesday for a 161 total and a six-way tie for fifth place.

The ace by Thomas was the only eagle scored in the tournament. Adell and Howard (pictured at left) both carded four birdies to share first place with six other golfers. Howard's 19 pars was good for fifth best in the field.

Howard's 3.25 average on the par 3s (two over par), 4.45 average on the par 4s (nine over par) and 5.13 average on the par 5s (one over par) were in the top five in each category.

Kirsten Locke added an 81 to her first-round 85 for a 166 total and 16th place while Taylor Yoshitake bettered her first round 87 with an 80 Tuesday for a 167 total and 20th place.

Four other members of head coach Scott Cartwright's team competed as individuals.

Alex Phillips posted a final-round 84 for a 169 total and 30th place while Giovanna Ascolani also carded a 169 total and 30th place with a final-round 83.

Caitlin Farley added an 88 to her first-round 84 for a 172 total and 48th place while Sorelle Sedej carded another 89 for a 178 total and 61st place.

The victory by Howard is the eighth individual title in the program's 12-year history and the first since Phillips won the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Challenge at Cypress Ridge last March.

Cal Poly has won 14 tournaments since the program's launch for the 2000-01 season, including the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Challenge last March.

The PLNU Super San Diego Championship was the first spring event for Cal Poly. The Mustangs return to action Feb. 19-21 at the Folino Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton at the Industry Hills Golf Club in the City of Industry, Calif.
