BROOKLYN, NY – Senior Kristina Santiago recorded her fourth double-double of the season when she tallied 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, but it would not be enough as the Long Island Blackbirds defeated the Cal Poly women's basketball team 69-61 in Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday.
With the loss Cal Poly falls to 3-6 on the season and will return to the court on Dec. 17th when the team travels to the University of San Diego for a 2 pm game. With the win LIU improves to 9-2.
Santiago hit 11 of 19 shots from the floor and seven of nine from the line. Five of her 15 boards came on the offensive end of the court. Her all-around game included two assists, a steal and three blocks.
Junior Kayla Griffin added 10 points including a three pointer.
Ashley Palmer scored a game-high 31 points as a total of four LIU players scored in double figures.
Cal Poly shot 41 percent from the floor, but only made one of eight from beyond the arch while LIU shot only 39 percent, but made nine of 18 from long range.
The Mustangs opened the game hot, moving out to a five point lead in the opening two minutes of the game capped by Griffin's three pointer. LIU battled back and after exchanging leads twice, took the lead for good at 11:56 on a three by Palmer.
LIU held its largest lead of the half, 33-22, with 5:17 remaining in the period on a layup by Palmer. The Blackbirds went into the break holding a 42-32 lead.
In the second half LIU built up its lead to 12 points (51-3) on a layup by Kiara Evans with 12:27 on the clock.
Cal Poly closed the gap to five points (56-51) at 7:49 on a layup by Santiago and cut the lead to three (4:51) on a pair of free throws by Ashlee Burns.
The Mustangs would remain within five points two more times in the final minute and a half but would get no closer as the Blackbirds would go on to win by eight (69-61).
