Cal Poly Swimmers in the Lead at Invitational
SOUTH GATE, California -- The 2011 Finis Collegiate Invitational has Cal Poly men and women in first place after the first two days of competition. The women have amassed 785 points through the first 336 events. The men stand at 606.5 with one more day of competition to go.
The Women came in first, second and third place in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The men came in first and fifth in the 200 yard freestyle relay.
An impressive finish for the women in the 500 yard freestyle with Cal Poly finishing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 in the finals. Senior Lacey Buck (pictured at right) posted an impressive 4:54.72 finish time. She was followed by Kylie France (5:01.36), Gloria Benefield (5:04.94), Taylor Spivey (5:05.05), Taylor Riley (5:07.50), Belen Enguidanos (5:10.08), and Brooke Collins (5:13.53).
On the men's side, Sophomores Adrian Brynnell (4:37.36) and Konrad Antoniuk (4:37.45) went one and two. Junior Eddie Huang came in third at 4:42.65, with freshmen Carter Price, Cameron Johnson and Jonathon Lantz also swimming in the finals.
In the women's 200 yard individual medley, the juniors dominated. Katrina Anderson finished first (2:03.64.) She was followed by Chrissy Thomas (2:07.36) and Angie Haven (2:08.34). Sophomore Amanda Maffris came in fourth at 2:09.40. On the men's side, junior Omar Dwidar placed fifth (2:00.28), freshman Tyler Pickett (2:00.65) sixth and sophomore Joseph Wasko (2:04.00) finished eighth. Freshmen Jimmy Deiparine and Kyle Lindsay also swam in the finals.
Cal Poly women also performed well in the 50 yard freestyle with 6 swimmers finishing in the top ten. Senrior Amy Morales won with a time of 23.81. She was followed by sophomore Jill Jones (23.95). Sophomores Andrea Voight (24.20) placed fourth, Rachel Cleak (24.42) placed fifth, Kelsey Engel (24.50) placed sixth and Danielle Wong (24.81) finished eighth. Freshman Padon Sivesind also made it to the finals.
Freshman Mackey Hopen tied for second place in the men's 50 yard freestyle. Freshman Christian Renfro came in tenth place (21.88). Also swimming in the finals were: Drew Cashier, Omar Dwidar, Matt Jude and Jesse McWhirk.
The 400 yard medley relay found Cal Poly women atop the leaderboard finishing in first, second and third place. The men's team finished in second, fourth and sixth places.
