SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior center fielder Whitley Gerhart homered during the opening game of the Cal Poly softball program's Sunday afternoon doubleheader against Cal State Northridge and sophomore first baseman Madi Vogelsang (above) swatted her team-leading fourth home run of 2012 in the nightcap as the Mustangs swept the Matadors at Bob Janssen Field, 4-1 and 3-1.
During Sunday's opening contest, sophomore shortstop Kim Westlund granted Cal Poly a 1-0 lead during the bottom of the second with an infield single that plated sophomore Jillian Andersen from second base.
After Cal State Northridge starting righthander Mia Pagano (7-13) retired the Mustangs in order during the third, Cal Poly struck for three runs in the fourth. Gerhart opened the bottom of the inning by swatting her third homer of the year to right center field. After Pagano struck Mustang junior third baseman Shea Williams with a pitch, Andersen reached on a throwing error from Matador third baseman Alyssa Ray. Cal Poly sophomore right fielder Cami Brown then delivered her first collegiate triple – a two-run shot – to hand the Mustangs a 4-0 advantage.
Cal State Northridge (8-31, 3-6), held to just two hits during the opening five innings by Mustang starting lefthander Chloe Wurst (3-12), earned a run back in the sixth through Pagano's two-out single into center field that scored catcher Mikayla Thielges. Wurst, however, retired four of the final five Matadors she faced to cement victory.
Westlund and Williams each pounded out a pair of hits for Cal Poly during Sunday's opener. With three total hits on Sunday, Westlund drove her team-leading batting average to .351.
The Mustangs (11-26, 3-6) returned in game No. 2 to once again pounce on Cal State Northridge early with Gerhart producing a one-out single during the bottom of the first to score Westlund.
Cal Poly, which stranded 10 baserunners during the second game, doubled its lead during the fourth with Vogelsang socking her leadoff homer to left field.
Cal State Northridge halved Cal Poly's lead during the top of the fifth with center fielder Abby Linn scoring on a bases-loaded wild pitch unleashed by Mustang starting righthander Jordan Yates (3-8). The errant pitch, however, proved to be one of Yates's few miscues during the matchup as the freshman scattered five Matador hits without a walk to earn her second victory of the week.
The Mustangs finalized the scoring during the bottom half of the fifth as Vogelsang singled a full-count pitch from Matador starting righthander Shelly Tait (0-4) into center field to score sophomore pinch runner Ashley Romano.
The pair of Sunday triumphs provided Cal Poly its first Big West Conference series victory of the 2012 campaign. Cal State Northridge captured Saturday's series opener, 4-0.
Cal Poly completes a six-game home stand when hosting UC Davis for a three-game April 21-22 series.
