Cal Poly Drops Doubleheader versus UC Santa Barbara
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly softball program saw a two-year, six-game winning streak against central coast rival UC Santa Barbara snapped on Saturday at Bob Janssen Field as the Mustangs dropped both ends of a doubleheader, falling in the opening game, 10-2, before dropping the nightcap in five innings, 12-2.
During Saturday's opening effort, Mustang starting righthander Rebecca Patton (4-13) struck out three and scattered four hits during her three-inning tenure, but three Cal Poly errors during the top of the first contributed to two UC Santa Barbara runs as the Gauchos led from the onset.
Highlighted by a two-run double from shortstop Keilani Jennings, UC Santa Barbara (17-18, 3-2) fortified its lead with three runs during the third. The Gauchos, who received a complete-game, four-hit effort from starting righthander Krista Cobb (7-9), added a run during the fifth on Cal Poly's fourth error of the afternoon before rounding off the victory with four additional runs in the seventh.
The Mustangs (6-25, 2-3), who fell from first place in the Big West Conference standings with Saturday's defeats, were held to a solitary hit from freshman first baseman Mariah Cochiolo (above) through the initial five innings.
Senior designated player Anna Cahn, however, produced a one-out single during the sixth and after Cobb struck Mustang senior catcher Stephanie Correia with a pitch, Patton loaded the bases with a fielder's choice. Cahn then reached home following an illegal pitch from Cobb and the Mustangs finalized their scoring during the seventh with Correia delivering a two-out single up the middle to plate freshman shortstop Kim Westlund.
During Saturday's second game, a bases-clearing triple by Gaucho left fielder Brooke Putich in the second allowed UC Santa Barbara to grab the only lead of the game. A run-scoring single from catcher Lainey DePompa accounted for one of UC Santa Barbara's two runs during the third and the Gauchos – who received a complete-game, three-hitter from starting lefthander Andriana Collins (10-9) – added seven runs in the fourth.
Cal Poly finally broke through against Collins during the bottom half of the fourth with junior right fielder Nicole Lund reaching base after being hit before Cahn and freshman left fielder Jillian Andersen drew one-out walks to load the bases. Cochiolo followed by singling through the left side of the infield to plate Lund and freshman Ashley Romano – pinch running in place of Cahn – and shorten Cal Poly's deficit to the final 12-2 scoreline.
Sophomore righthander Trista Thomas (1-4), who struck out three through three and one-third innings, suffered the loss for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs and Gauchos complete their three-game series on Sunday at 12 noon.
