Men’s Tennis to Travel to Berkeley for First-Round Match vs. Texas Tech
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly men's tennis team will play Texas Tech in the opening round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship in Berkeley on May 12th 9 am. The No. 14 seed, California, will host and play the University of Texas-San Antonio. The winners of the two matches will advance to the second round and play in Berkeley on May 12th or 13th.
The Mustangs advanced to the championship by winning the Big West Conference Tournament and post a 15-7 overall record. Texas Tech enters the tournament 15-8 and is currently ranked 19th in the latest ITA poll. Cal Poly is currently ranked 63rd.
Cal, ranked 14th in the nation with a 12-11 record, hosts UTSA with a 13-10.
Cal Poly concluded the Big West regular season 5-0 to become the third men's tennis team in conference history to finish undefeated. As a result, the Mustangs entered the Big West Championships as the No. 1 seed and receive a first round bye
Six of the Mustangs' losses have come against ranked opponents.
Texas Tech lost in the semifinal round of the Big 12 Tennis Championships to No. 28 Baylor, 4-3.
Cal lost to UCLA, 5-0, in the Pac 12 Tennis Championship after defeating Washington, 4-3.
UTSA received the Southland automatic bid after winning the conference championship as the No. 4 seed.
