SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Justin Haley was Cal Poly's lone top-20 finisher as the Mustangs finished seventh in the 2012 Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday at the La Quinta Resort's Mountain Course.
Haley (pictured at right) carded a final-round 70 to finish in a tie for 20th place with two other golfers, all with four-over-par 220 totals on the 6,771-yard, par-72 layout. Haley posted 75s on Sunday and Monday.
Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs earned a four-person 295 total Tuesday, their best round of the three-day, 54-hole event, finishing one stroke ahead of eighth-place Cal State Northridge.
UC Davis successfully defended its Big West title with a six-under-par 858 total, one stroke better than runner-up Long Beach State. Cal State Fullerton was two more strokes back at 861 for third place.
Individual champion was wire-to-wire leader Alex Edfort of Pacific with rounds of 68, 68 and 67 for a 13-under-par 203 total, five strokes ahead of runner-up Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton. Kei Kita of UC Santa Barbara was third at 212.
Cal Poly's Grant Martens matched par Tuesday and finished in a tie for 23rd place with a five-over-par 221 total while Scott Patterson (76) and Bryce Greeley (77) finished in a tie for 35th place with 227 totals. Patterson was named honorable mention All-Big West Conference.
Trevor Guthrie carded a final-round 80 for a 240 total and 43rd place.
