Shipman Named Cal Poly's Big Sky Conference Scholar-Athlete

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior Billy Shipman II. a guard on the offensive line of Cal Poly's football team, has been named Cal Poly's Scholar-Athlete for the Big Sky Conference.

To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade-point-average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale), be a member of the graduating class and/or have completed his or her last year of intercollegiate athletic eligibility, have completed at least two years of intercollegiate competition and be a letterwinner in his or her respective sport.

Shipman II was accepted as a member of the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society last April. The Hampshire Honor Society recognizes super academic performance and excellence in intercollegiate football.

A center, left guard and right guard during his Mustang career, Shipman played in all 12 games last fall with 11 starts at right guard.

Shipman helped anchor an offensive front that led Cal Poly to the No. 1 national ranking in team rushing in the regular season for the fourth straight year. The Mustangs also allowed just seven sacks and were ranked No. 3 in third-down conversions, 14th in scoring offense, seventh in total first downs, No. 9 in red zone offense and seventh in time of possession.

Shipman is a 2012 graduate of Valencia High School in Valencia, Calif. A 2016 Big Sky Conference All-Academic Team member, Shipman is a business administration major with a concentration in finance.

Each Big Sky school nominates a male and female student-athlete for the Scholar-Athlete award. Cal Poly competes in the Big Sky in football only, completing its fifth season in the conference last fall and finishing tied for fourth place. The Mustangs were 7-5 overall, earning their fourth Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth in the last 12 years.

Cal Poly is 25-15 in five seasons in the Big Sky, capturing a co-championship in 2012, its first year in the 13-team conference.
