SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly will open its 2017 football season on Saturday, August 26, a day earlier than originally scheduled. The season-opener vs. Colgate will kick off inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium at 4:05 p.m. Pacific.

The date of the game, which was originally announced for Sunday, August 27, was changed after collaborating with ESPN officials. ESPNU will televise the Week Zero game as originally planned, with a streaming option on the ESPN app.

Patriot League member Colgate posted a 5-5 mark last fall with wins over Yale, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Georgetown. The Raiders finished third in the seven-team Patriot League with a 4-3 record, one year after claiming the Patriot League crown in 2015.

It will be Colgate's first California visit since 1999 at St. Mary's. The Raiders won that game, 43-13, on their way to a Patriot League championship season. Cal Poly will complete the two-game home-and-home series in Hamilton, N.Y., during an upcoming campaign.

Cal Poly's 2017 schedule features five home games and six contests on the road.

In addition to Colgate, the Mustangs will host Northern Arizona, Weber State, Portland State and Sacramento State for Big Sky games, all at 6:05 p.m. On the road, Cal Poly plays non-conference contests at San Jose State and Northern Iowa and Big Sky games at Idaho State, Southern Utah, UC Davis and Northern Colorado.

Cal Poly players will report July 24, with the first "fall" practice slated for July 25. In April, the NCAA Division I Council announced a new rule eliminating multiple contact practices a day in preseason, effectively ending two-a-day practice sessions.

A single day may include a single, three-hour, on-field practice session and a walk-through. During walk-throughs, protective equipment such as helmets and pads can't be worn, and contact is prohibited. Walk-throughs also can't include conditioning activities.

Teams are being allowed to open practice a week earlier than before. In addition, because Cal Poly is playing a Week Zero contest, the start of fall camp has been pushed back another week.
