Last season, Cal Poly played its first Friday night football contest in 50 years. This year, the Mustangs will make it two in a row as the Mustangs' 2013 Big Sky Conference opener at Portland State has been moved from Saturday, Sept. 28, to Friday, Sept. 27, at the request of the Portland Timbers.

Twelve-Game Cal Poly Football Schedule for 2013 Announced
Cal Poly will play a 12-game regular-season schedule for the first time in 2013. The Mustangs’ second season in the Big Sky Conference features six home games for the first time since 2008 along with six road contests, including two matchups against Football Bowl Subdivision teams, and, for the second straight year, no Division II foes.

Cal Poly captured a share of the Big Sky Conference championship in its first year in the league, won nine games for the first time since 2005 and earned a berth in the 2012 NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the third time in eight seasons, posting its ninth winning record in the last 10 years. Fourth-year head coach Tim Walsh is already looking ahead to next year.

No. 12 Cal Poly Falls to No. 5 Sam Houston State in FCS Playoffs, 18-16
Sam Houston State, among the top 10 teams in the Football Championship Subdivision in rushing offense, total offense and scoring offense, was held to just 18 points by the Cal Poly defense Saturday afternoon. The Bearkats, however, took advantage of three Cal Poly turnovers, a blocked punt and a trio of personal foul penalties to earn an 18-16 victory over the Mustangs in a second-round NCAA Division I FCS playoff game at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.

No. 12 Cal Poly (9-2, 7-1 Big Sky), which opened the 2012 campaign with seven straight wins and won its final two games of the regular season to clinch an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth, opens its third bid for the FCS title Saturday afternoon, visiting No. 5 Sam Houston State (8-3, 6-1 Southland) for a second-round contest inside Elliott T. Cal Poly Earns First-Round Playoff Bye, Visits Sam Houston State on Dec. 1
Cal Poly has earned its third NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth and drew a first-round bye. Coach Tim Walsh’s Mustangs, who defeated Northern Arizona 42-34 Saturday to finish in a three-way tie for first place in the Big Sky Conference and posted a 9-2 overall mark, will play in the second round against Sam Houston State (8-3) on Saturday, Dec. 1.

In its first year in the Big Sky Conference, the No. 17-ranked Cal Poly football team gained a share of the title. Sophomore slotback Kristaan Ivory scored two touchdowns and senior quarterback Andre Broadous threw a pair of scoring passes as the Mustangs overcame an early 7-0 deficit and beat No. 15 Northern Arizona 42-34 on Saturday in the Walkup Skydome.

Senior slotback Deonte Williams rushed for 187 yards and one touchdown, junior place kicker Bobby Zalud kicked what proved to be the game-winning field goal from 51 yards and senior cornerback Nico Molino clinched the win with a late interception as Cal Poly upset Wyoming of the Football Bowl Subdivision 24-22 Saturday afternoon before 21,728 in War Memorial Stadium.
