UC Davis Rallies for 11-Inning 5-4 Victory Over Cal Poly
DAVIS, Calif. – Third baseman Paul Politi singled to right-center field with two outs in the 11th inning, driving in the winning run from second base as UC Davis scored a walk-off 5-4 victory over Cal Poly in the opener of a Big West Conference baseball series Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
The loss snapped a four-game Mustang winning streak and dropped Cal Poly to 26-18 for the season and 9-7 in Big West games. UC Davis improved to 17-24 and 5-8.
After Cal Poly scored twice in the top of the fifth inning, UC Davis answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Scott Kalush's third homer of the year. The Aggies added another run in the inning on Evan Heptig's double to left-center field.
UC Davis senior southpaw Anthony Kupbens pitched the first seven innings, scattering seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts. The win went to Harry Stanwyck (2-3) as he pitched four innings and allowed two runs and four hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts.
The loss went to freshman right-hander Reed Reilly (4-2), who gave up one run and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings with two walks and one strikeout. Starter Joey Wagman allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Michael Holback tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning on a single by senior shortstop Mike Miller, a double by sophomore designated hitter Tim Wise and a walk by junior center fielder Mitch Haniger. Sophomore third baseman Jimmy Allen singled up the middle to drive in one run and sophomore left fielder David Armendariz's sacrifice fly to deep center field plated the second run.
Trailing 4-2 in the ninth, Allen hit a bases-loaded two-run single up the middle to tie the game. Allen is now 4-for-6 with nine RBI with the bases loaded this season.
Cal Poly's 11 hits included three singles by Miller, two by both Allen and sophomore catcher Chris Hoo and doubles by Wise, Armendariz and Haniger.
UC Davis outhit Cal Poly 16-11, led by Politi with four hits and David Popkins with three.
The Mustangs had two runners on base in both the second and third innings, but couldn't bring them home, leaving 10 runners on base for the game. Only one Cal Poly leadoff batter reached base in the contest -- Denver Chavez with a ninth-inning walk.
UC Davis loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but failed to score. The Aggies also had two runners on base in the 10th and were held off the scoreboard until Politi ended the contest with his RBI single in the 11th.
Cal Oiky is 1-3 in extra-inning games this season.
UC Davis Friday starter Dayne Quist did not pitch Friday due to a finger injury.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Senior southpaw Kyle Anderson (7-1, 2.64 ERA) will start for Cal Poly against UC Davis senior right-hander Tom Briner (2-6, 4.31 ERA).
The series finale is Sunday at 1 p.m.
