Cal Poly junior center fielder Mitch Haniger is the second-highest Mustang ever drafted by Major League Baseball. Haniger was the 38th overall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Monday, chosen in the Compensation A round by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Haniger, Wagman Earn Top Mustang Baseball Awards
Cal Poly outfielder Mitch Haniger earned the Cal Poly baseball team's Ozzie Smith Most Valuable Player award for 2012 while right-hander Joey Wagman has been named winner of the Mike Krukow Outstanding Pitcher award. Both are juniors. Mustang 10th-year head baseball coach Larry Lee announced the team award winners Monday.

Cal Poly’s first baseball All-American in five years is junior outfielder Mitch Haniger. Earlier this week the Archbishop Mitty High School graduate became the third Mustang to earn Big West Conference Player of the Year honors. Haniger is a second-team Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Cal Poly Baseball Not Selected for 2012 NCAA Tournament
For the first time in 26 years, the Big West Conference will send just one representative to the NCAA baseball regionals. Conference champion Cal State Fullerton will make its 21st consecutive trip to a regional while Cal Poly, despite finishing alone in second place, winner of 14 of its last 17 games and the team with the most wins in the Big West during the regular season with 36, was not extended an at-large invitation.
