Mustangs Fall Short on the Road, 67-61

STOCKTON, Calif. – Junior Shawn Lewis scored a team-high 16 points with senior Lorenzo Keeler adding 13 points for the Mustangs in a 67-61 loss to Pacific in Stockton on Saturday at the Alex G. Spanos Center in a Big West Conference basketball game.
With the loss Cal Poly falls to 8-14 overall and 5-5 in conference play while BWC leading Pacific improves to 15-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
The Tigers were led by Demetrece Young with 18 points while Terrell Smith added 10 points in the win.
Pacific shot 49 percent from the floor while the Mustangs hit 39 percent. Cal Poly also made 39 percent form long range, connecting on 12 of 31. Pacific made seven of 21, good for 33 percent. The Tigers went to the line 23 times and made 16 while Cal Poly made just three attempts and made all.
Pacific outrebounded the Mustangs 34-28 and committed two less turnovers (12-10)
Shawn Lewis’ points came when he connected on six of 12 from the floor and made all three attempts at the line. Keeler was five of 14 from the field and three of eight from long range. Sophomore David Hanson added 10 points in the game when he made four of 14 shots from the floor and two of seven from beyond the arch.
Keeler and Hanson each had eight rebounds to lead the Mustangs while Sam Willard and Joe Ford had eight each to lead the Tigers.
Young led the Tigers when he made four of 11 from the floor, but connected on four of nine long range and six of eight from the line.
Pacific open the game on a 12-0 run before Keeler hit a three for the Mustangs at 13:11 left in the half.
After a Pacific bucket, Jordan Lewis hit a three to cut the lead to eight (14-6) with 12:23 left in the period.
Keeler hit his second three of the game after a Pacific turnover to make the score 14-9.
But Pacific rallied on a Ford jumper and a traditional three point play by Allen Huddleston to give the Tigers a 19-9 lead at 10:55.
Pacific made it 20-9 when the Cal Poly bench was whistled for a technical with the Tigers making one of two from the line and a 20-9 lead.
Keeler stopped the 9-0 run when he connected on a jumper at 9:21 and was followed up by a three by Charles Anderson at 8:35 cutting the lead to 23-14.
Shawn Lewis and Hanson hit back to back threes (7:02) cutting the lead to 25-23 and forcing a Pacific timeout.
The Mustangs grabbed their first lead of the game when Hanson hit his second three (6:22) of the game and a 26-25 lead.
Cal Poly extended the lead to 28-25 on a pair of free throws by Shawn Lewis.
Pacific regained the lead (31-30) on a layup by Nyika Williams with 1:45 left in the half.
The Tigers extended the lead to 35-30 on a jumper by Pat Eveland (:58), but Cal Poly responded with a layup by Shawn Lewis.
Pacific hit the last bucket of the half when Lavar Neufville hit a layup with 12 seconds left and went to the break with a 37-32 lead.
Pacific opened the second half with on a lay up by Willard while Cal Poly responded when Shawn Lewis slammed home a dunk with 18:49 in the game.
Shawn Lewis stopped a Pacific run with he hit a jumper to cut in to the Pacific lead (44-36) at 1646 on a feed from Hanson.
Pacific extended its lead to 53-38 when Young hit a three at 12:02, but the Mustangs responded when Kyle Odister hit a three of his own to make the score 53-41 with 10:41 left in the game.
The Mustangs got to within 10 at 53-43 when Anderson got free for a fast break layup with 9:37 left.
The Mustangs cut the lead to nine (58-49) when Odister connected on a three with 5:19 left in the game.
Cal Poly was within eight, 62-54, when Hanson tipped in a ball with 1:41 left in the game. Odister made it 62-57 when he connected again at 1:08.
Keeler then made a layup with :28 seconds left to make the score 64-59.
Cal Poly would not get any closer in the final seconds with the final score 67-61.
The Mustangs return to the court on Thursday, Feb. 11, when Cal Poly hosts Long Beach State at 7 pm in Mott Gym.
