SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Pairings for the ESPN BracketBuster games were announced today with Cal Poly making the trip to Hawai’i for the 2010 game on Feb. 20. This will be the second time in five years Cal Poly has drawn a Western Athletic Conference team. Game time has yet to be determined.
The Warriors will host Fresno State (Feb. 6) and travel to Louisiana Tech (Feb. 13) and New Mexico State (Feb. 15) before hosting Cal Poly.
The Mustangs and Hawai’i have played two common opponents this year. Hawai’i played at UC Irvine on Dec. 2 and lost 80-70. The second game was a match up in the Diamond Head Classic when the Warriors hosted Saint Mary’s College. SMC won the game 84-75. The Mustangs lost to SMC 92-67 on Nov. 23. Cal Poly defeated UC Irvine 95-81 on Jan. 4.
Hawai’i enters the week with 9-13 overall record and 2-7 record in conference play.
This will be the second meeting between the two teams with the Warriors winning 86-84 in Honolulu on Dec. 14, 1996.
Cal Poly is 2-2 in BracketBuster games while Hawai’i is 3-4 all time. This will be the fourth straight year that UH has been match up with a Big West Conference team.
The other seven Big West teams not selected to compete in a televised BracketBusters game will play non-conference opponents on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The non-televised games involving Big West home teams:
SIU Edwardsville at Cal State Fullerton
Drake at Cal State Northridge
Marist at UC Irvine
Youngstown State at UC Riverside
The non-televised games involving Big West road teams:
Long Beach State at Idaho
UC Davis at Boise State
UC Santa Barbara at Fresno State
Pacific will represent the Big West in one of 11 televised BracketBusters games on either the ESPN2 or ESPNU networks.
The eighth annual BracketBusters event, a two-day men's college basketball extravaganza pitting potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls against each other Feb. 19-20, will feature 11 nationally televised games - on either ESPN2 or ESPNU - selected from a pool of 98 teams.
