SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Senior forward Santwon Latunde’s 19-point, 10-rebound double-double powered Cal State Bakersfield to a 57-53 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday night before 2,324 in Mott Gym.

The Roadrunners improved to 4-16 with the win and two of the victories are against the Mustangs, including a 70-63 decision on New Year’s Eve at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.

Senior forward Trent Blakley added 17 points while freshman guard Stephon Carter contributed 16 points and six assists for Cal State Bakersfield, which trailed only once in the game.

Cal Poly, which fell to 8-12 on the year, was led by sophomore forward David Hanson with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Junior forward Will Taylor added 12 points and 12 rebounds, tying career highs in both categories.

Cal State Bakersfield led throughout the first half after scoring the first six points of the game. Cal Poly closed the gap to four points on three occasions before the Roadrunner scored the final eight points of the half for a 32-20 advantage at the break.

A layup by Latunde 30 seconds into the second half capped a 10-0 Roadrunner run and gave Cal State Bakersfield its largest lead of the game at 34-20.

Cal Poly then went on a 13-2 run to climb back into the contest, trailing 36-33 on two free throws by Hanson with 12:53 to go in the game.

The Mustangs’ only lead of the game came at 43-42 on two more free throws by Hanson with 5:53 to play. A jumper by Latunde restored Cal State Bakersfield’s lead at 44-43 with 5:29 to go and the Roadrunners never looked back, twice building a five-point cushion down the stretch.

A layup by Mustang sophomore guard Justin Brown trimmed the Roadrunners’ lead to 56-53 with 16.1 seconds to go, but Carter made one of two free throws with 15.6 seconds remaining and Cal Poly missed a pair of three-point attempts in the final eight seconds.

Cal Poly attempted 25 more floor shots than Cal State Bakersfield, but connected on just 22 of 72 for 31 percent. The Roadrunners made 18 of their 47 field goal attempts (38 percent) and were 19 of 23 from the free throw line compared to just seven of 14 for Cal Poly.

The Mustangs were just two of 16 from three-point range while the Roadrunners made two of nine.

Cal Poly outrebounded Cal State Bakersfield 50-34 and, with 12 turnovers, committed two fewer miscues than the Roadrunners.

Coach Joe Callero’s Mustangs return to Big West Conference play next week, visiting UC Davis on Thursday night and Pacific on Saturday night. Cal Poly is third in the Big West with a 5-3 mark.
