John Madden (Football : Inducted Oct 1987)

John Madden played football at Cal Poly in 1957 and 1958. He also played baseball in 1958. As a player at Cal Poly, Madden was an All-Conference lineman.

One of the most successful NFL coaches, Madden's accomplishments are the result of an exceptionally wise and unique perspectives of the game. In 10 years as head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Madden compiled a regular-season record of 103 wins and 32 losses and seven ties, making him the first coach in the NFL to win 100 games in his first 10 years with one team. He guided the Raiders to seven Western Division Titles and a victory of the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI.

In 1982 he was awarded the Golden Mike Award by the Touchdown club of America. In 1985 he was named the Sports Personality of the Year by the American Sportscasters Association. He has won the Emmy for Sports Broadcasting six times.

In 1979, John became a television commentator, and has been recognized as the best in his field. He has also been a Cal Poly Honored Alum and donated his name, energy and time to a celebrity golf tournament to raise scholarship funds for Cal Poly student-athletes. John currently works for ABC as their lead football analyst and commentator for Monday Night Football.
