The CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program is designed to help student-athletes realize higher academic achievement, increased likelihood of graduation and enter a chosen profession with a higher level of vision, knowledge, motivation, self-responsibility and greater overall success.
“The mission of the Life Skills Program is to provide a systematic personal development program designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs. The focus of the program is on the individual as a whole person academically, athletically and emotionally and on the changing needs of that individual during college and in the years after graduation.”
By focusing on “real life” skills and personal development, the CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program not only assists the student-athletes with meeting daily challenges, but also enhances student-athlete’s growth in their college years and beyond.
The CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program serves as a means to prepare student-athletes for life after college by focusing on five areas:
• Commitment to Academic Excellence
To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.
• Commitment to Athletic Excellence
To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete.
• Commitment to Personal Development
To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills.
• Commitment to Career Development
To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.
• Commitment to Service

Cal Poly Student-Athletes Team Up for Read Across America Day
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. - Students in San Luis Obispo joined millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the ninth annual National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day on Friday, March 14, 2008.
NEA's Read Across America Day, which falls on Dr. Seuss's 103rd birthday, expected to draw more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read.
To honor the good doctor and celebrate the fun and value of reading, Cal Poly Athletics joined with CL Smith Elementary School and many of America's leading literacy, youth, and civic groups in bringing a nation of readers together under one hat -- the red and white stovepipe made famous by the Cat in the Hat -- for a flurry (or furry) of reading excitement!
C.L. Smith Elementary School served as host to two men’s soccer and one track and field athlete serving as guest readers to the students at this year’s event. The athletes were selected to accompany a group of students back to the classroom to read them a story and share about the importance of reading in their academic and personal life.
The goal of Read Across America is to show America's children the joy of reading every day. For more information NEA's Read Across America, visit www.nea.org/readacross and learn of other reading celebrations that are happening from coast to coast.
The National Education Association (NEA) annually sponsors Read Across America. Now in its eleventh year, NEA's Read Across America focuses the country's attention on how important it is to motivate children to read in addition to helping them master basic skills.
NEA launched the Read Across America program in 1997. The nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss, who epitomizes a love of learning. Dr. Seuss's use of rhyme makes his books an effective tool for teaching young children the basic skills they need to be successful.

The Cal Poly Adopt-A-School Program, in its fifth year, is designed to offer students in San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County the opportunity to develop a relationship with student-athlete role models from Cal Poly. If your school is interested in becoming a part of the Cal Poly Adopt-A-School program, please call the Marketing Office at (805) 756-0275.
