Joey Wagman Junior, Pitcher, 6-0, 180, Danville, Calif. (Monte Vista HS)
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior right-hander Joey Wagman, who earned his first
career complete game Friday night, has been selected as the
Coca-Cola/Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
One week after allowing one unearned run and four hits over eight
innings with 10 strikeouts against CSU Bakersfield, Wagman went the
distance for his first career complete game -- high school and
college -- with a five-hitter in a 5-1 win over UC Santa
Barbara.
Wagman struck out three and the lone run he allowed was in the
eighth inning when Cal Poly was leading 5-0. Wagman (8-3), who
moved over the century mark in innings pitched, picked up his
eighth win of the year and lowered his ERA to 2.42.
Wagman had pitched eight innings five previous times this season,
but never worked the ninth until Friday night. Twice this season he
has recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts -- in a no-decision
against San Diego State on March 22 and 10 more in the win over CSU
Bakersfield on May 11.
Cal Poly, which swept UC Santa Barbara for its fifth weekend
series sweep of the season, has won 11 of its last 14 games to move
13 games above the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Wagman, a business administration major, has won the award twice
before -- following a season-opening 6-0 win over Oklahoma State
when he pitched eight scoreless innings and after scattering seven
hits over eight scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over UC Irvine.
Cal Poly (33-20, 13-8 Big West) closes out the 2012 regular season
this weekend with a three-game Big West series at UC Riverside
(21-28, 9-12 Big West) Friday through Sunday.
