Joey Wagman, Pitcher, 6-0, 180, Junior, Danville, Calif.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior
right-hander Joey Wagman, who pitched eight
scoreless innings in a season-opening 6-0 baseball victory over
Oklahoma State on Friday night, has been named Coca-Cola/Cal Poly
Athlete of the Week.
Wagman had a no-hitter until Cowboy third baseman Mark Ginther
singled through the right side of the Mustang infield with two outs
in the seventh inning.
A Monte Vista High School graduate, Wagman allowed two hits and no
walks in his eight-inning stint, striking out five Oklahoma State
batters.
Wagman did not allow a Cowboy base runner to reach third base and
only one made it to second base.
Wagman, who started seven games late in the 2011 season, mostly on
Sundays, threw 101 pitches Friday. A year ago he finished with a
4-3 record and 3.62 ERA, striking out 52 batters in 64 2/3
innings.
The Mustangs swept the three-game series against the Cowboys,
their first season-opening series sweep since 2006 when Cal Poly
swept Fresno State, also in Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly hosts Santa Clara in an early season matchup of unbeaten
3-0 teams Tuesday night at 6 in Baggett Stadium.
Wagman returns to the mound Friday afternoon when the Mustangs
begin a four-game series at Loyola Marymount.
