Andre Dome, Junior, 5-11, 165, Arroyo Grande, Calif.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior men's tennis standout Andre Dome, who was a perfect 4-0 in a
pair of Big West Conference matches last week, has been selected as
the Coca-Cola/Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
In a 5-2 win over UC Irvine on Friday in Irvine, Dome and Matt
Fawcett, ranked 34th in the nation, picked up the Mustangs' lone
win in doubles with a dominating 8-2 win over Sam Gould and Jacob
Jung.
In singles play, Dome quickly evened the match with a
straight-set, 6-0, 6-4, win over Fabian Matthews on the first
court. Dome entered the match ranked 34th while Matthews was ranked
92nd.
The next day against UC Riverside, another 5-2 Mustang victory,
Andre Dome and Sebastian Bell blanked Simon Peters and Jimmy
Roberts, 8-0, in doubles. Dome was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Felix
Macherez in his singles match.
Dome, a 2008 graduate of Arroyo Grande High School, is 20-7 in
singles (14-4 in duals) and 13-4 in doubles this season. He has won
the Coca-Cola/Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week award three
times during the 2011-12 academic year.
Cal Poly's pair of conference victories improved its season record
to 13-7 and conference mark to a spotless 5-0, clinching the
Mustangs' third Big West Conference regular season championship
outright in Nick Carless' first season at the helm.
The Big West Conference Men's Tennis Championship in Indian Wells
runs Friday through Sunday. As the No. 1 seed, Cal Poly received a
first-round bye and, on Saturday at 11 a.m., will face the winner
of Friday's match between No. 4 Pacific and No. 5 UC Davis.
The championship match is set for Sunday at 9 a.m.
